Mr Saloman : The Answers

Nick Saloman says :

Why are you involved in The Album Zone ?
I used to DJ with our beloved master Johnny Reece on Radio Caroline many moons ago . When he started up the Album Zone I did a few shows for him, but I had to stop because I was just too busy with my own career as a minor league rock person. Recently, I've been having a bit of a rest from the constant round of album/tour, album/tour, and I was only too pleased to find out that Johnny was actually wanting to ask me back. So, here I am.
What's your favourite colour ?
Green
What's your favourite sweets ?
I genuinely don't like sweets very much. I can't stand chocolate, or cakes, or biscuits, which is good, because if I did, I'd be about 25 stone!
Does Airwaves chewing gum count? I like that.
Favourite Food :
Ah, here's my downfall. I love my savouries. Curries, Chinese, Italian, salt beef & latkas. I love vegetables and eggs. Fish & Chips, the Sea Shell in Lisson Grove is over-rated, but still good. There's a brilliant restaurant in Wood Green called Vrisaki, that does the best Mezze (Turkish) anywhere. Finger food is great too. I'm not berserk about fast food, though I do sometimes succumb. Oh, and Babur in Forest Hill is the best curry house I've ever been to.
Least Favourite Food : I'm not a fan of anything too salty (except for salt beef). I don't like Mexican food very much. I'm not a great fruit eater either. And as I said before, I really don't like sweets, chocolate & cake.
What do you want to be when you grow up ?

What's the greatest Album ever made ?
Blimey, let's see. Maybe 'Are You Experienced'.
If you could change something about yourself, what would it be ?

PROFILE : Rich Phoenix

RICH PHOENIX
Rich Phoenix. Not so much a name, more a state of mind. Rich is the most experienced of the AZ Crew, having worked at, amongst others, (sharp intake of breath) - ABC New York, various Stations in Ohio including WSLR and WKSU-FM, and a whole plethora of New Jersey Stations such as WERA, WRAN, and WCTC. Quite what he thinks he is doing joining up with a bunch of imbeciles at the AZ is no-one's business, of course, but we're 'helluva glad' he's here. (a little 'Stateside phrasing' there to make him feel more at home). Rich was/is an AZ listener. A 'fan' if you like. It was Reecey himself going 'live' round the globe late one night some years back who received a call from Rich saying "How's London ? - we're listening to you here in New Jersey". Cool. Since then Rich has become great friends with us all, and we really thought we'd better get him on air. In the past, he has met/interviewed many luminaries of the Music Biz, such as Macca, Harrison, and Ringo, also Yoko too (who Rich described as 'interesting') though the favourite quote from the man himself came when he was describing doing a Radio show, interviewing Cheech and Chong. 'What were they like' ?, I asked. "Nuts" was the reply. Great stuff, and great fun too, we were told. Rich is also a great friend of Norman 'Hurricane' Smith, who I guess very many of you know, not just for those hits, but for his production work with The Beatles. In recent years Rich has been working in Municipal Government, which we hope of course will stand us in good stead when the shit really hits the fan.
Watch out for his excellent Shows - in your very ears, here on the Zone.

PROFILE : Nick Saloman

NICK SALOMAN
For those of you leaning towards Psychedelia as a way of life, you will already be aware of the one and only Nick Saloman. Leader of the marvellous band The Bevis Frond, Nick first crossed paths with the 'Zoners' when meeting Johnny Reece at a pop quiz, and within weeks ended up presenting some Satellite Radio Shows for RNI Norway back in 1992, for a year or so. Another chance meeting years later between Nick and Reecey at a gig in London in late 2000 led to Nick being immediately enrolled (captured ?) once again in the school for Zoneheads. At a recent interrogation, we managed to extract the following information :His first 'proper' gig attended was in 1963, when he persuaded his Mum to take him along to the Hammersmith Odeon, to see The Beatles. Since then, they have been his favourite Band. By 1966, he'd added the Stones and The Yardbirds, amongst others, to the list. Other great influences through the years are the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Beach Boys, and Country Joe and the Fish. Nicks musical knowledge is, frankly, encyclopedic, and he has a record collection to rival, perhaps even surpass, the rest of the Album Zone crew put together. In recent years with his Band, Nick has travelled all over the world, playing Gigs and sharing stages with the likes of Arthur Lee, Country Joe, Randy California, and Nirvana.
Check out his Show on The Album Zone, and you will learn things you never knew your brain had the space for in the first place. Believe me, it's an education.

PROFILE : James Barclay

JAMES BARCLAY

profile to follow...

PROFILE : Gil Legine

GIL LEGINE
Gil Legine is the tallest of the Album Zone Presenters, at 9 foot 4.
He also doubles (trebles ?) his work for the Album Zone by being not only a Sound Engineer, but is an accomplished Drummer.
He is not currently listed in the Guinness Book of Records, rather surprising as he is actually taller than the Empire State Building. However, on the rare occasions when he steps out of line, the other Presenters are always on hand to head-butt him on the kneecaps. Gil is also bionic. (Long story.)
For a while, Gil presented the A.Z. 'Jazz Club', as he was the only one who knows about these things, and the rest of us don't.
The 'Alan Titchmarsh of the Album Zone' as he is called (only here, nowhere else) is attempting to now landscape his garden at home in the leafy suburbs of Copenhagen, in his spare time. Exactly where he gets this 'spare time' from remains a mystery to us all, considering his varied occupations.
Gil has also been a regular at the Album Zone Broadcasts from Radio 6 in northern France, and at the RSL Broadcasts in Holland at local Station, Radio Stad Harlingen. He also joined the rest of the crew cutting his teeth (not literally) doing the 'night-time' Album spots at recent RSLs on Radio Caroline, playing the best in Album music to a generally bemused audience, who were more used to vile commercial atrocities.
His obsessions include Frank Zappa, Andrea Corr, Jazz, and Curry.
He'll have the Soup.

PROFILE : Richard Bismarck

RICHARD BISMARCK

I'm afraid I first met Richard Bismarck in the mid eighties. I cannot remember the exact date. A thrusting young radio presenter, carving out his own niche in student radio in Loughborough; the studio mixing desk was never the same afterwards. He made his mark on Thursday evening's "Nightshift". I was suprised when he told me that he had never actually been a student at Loughborough University.
" I was never a student at Loughborough University" he said. LCR (Loughborough Campus Radio) turned out to be a fertile place for other future Album Zone presenters. Such favorites as Colin W Mueslibar and James Barclay also hailed from these exciting times.
After out-staying his welcome in Loughborough, the young Mr Bismarck needed a new challenge. Mr Mueslibar had left for the high seas (on Radio Caroline) and James Barclay had started his collection of pre-war valve radios. Richard asked my advice. It was then that he related a previous, colourful radio history pre-dating his campus radio days: he and James Barclay had grown-up together in South Nottinghamshire. They spent most of their formative years trying to get an AM signal to travel the 300 metres between their respective parental homes. The two were often spied slowly walking around their village with a transister radio playng white noise. They paused only at telegraph poles to see if a signal had been induced along the wire. They reached the conclusion that only dogs could fit their listener profile (if carrying a radio) as they spent more time hanging aroung telegraph poles.
Inevitably, one day, came the breakthrough, through the static came the unmistakable voice of Richard Bismark " On 94.2, this is Radio Tapir, the station with the long flexible proboscis"
After hearing the tale I advised him not to give up the day job.
Several years later, and after a very costly court case, Messrs Bismarck & Barclay found themselves on board a small boat heading for the floating Radio Caroline. Richard took up the prime 2.00-4.00 am slot which he made his own when everyone else was asleep, when he was able to get time off work, and when the transmitter engineer wasn't fiddling with the aerial system. Although no longer at sea and broadcasting a local service, he later told me he had fulfilled a lifetime ambition (and I believe him).
An embryo of the group that later became the "Album Zone" was forming on board the ship with Johnny Reece the catalyst. Bismarck joined them on several tours to France (Radio 6), the Netherlands (Radio Stad Harlingen) and borrrowing the same short-wave transmitters used for the BBC World Service. With very little sleep and living on chicken & baguettes (from the Radio 6 fridge) and eggybreads at RSH (imported from S.E. England) he played his music and went to bed. And stayed there. This brings us up to the present day. Richard Bismarck is apparently still alive and producing programmes for the Album Zone. After such an exciting life he tells me he still has further ambitions. The tiling in the kitchen is still not done plus his library books are in fact, overdue.
I cannot help but wonder what else he could possibly get up to in the coming years. Watch this space. Or don't.

PROFILE : Zoe Street

ZOE STREET
Ah, she's our little Punkbaby. Reason ? Well, she likes Punk, Ska, and New Wave, and her Programmes are choc-a-bloc with it. And - fact - when she was born she was nicknamed Punkbaby for her sticky-out hair fashion statement, at just a matter of hours old. True ! Zoe is a well respected Music Journo, writing for various magazines and for online publications too, such as Fly, Gigwise, and BBC Music Interactive. Catch her regular show 'The Pogo Sessions' on The Album Zone. If you want to know anything about what's happening, what did happen, or what is likely to happen, then she's your girl. Zoe joined up with the Album Zone renegades in late 2005, when she met up with Johnny Reece in a music store. The rest is history. Watch this space.

PROFILE : Andy Miles

ANDY MILES

Our '70's West Coast Rock and 'Live' Rock specialist' as he's known to people who like long sentences, Andy is another veteran (he won't like that) from our French Broadcasts, and is now a fully paid-up member of The Album Zone team (well, a member anyway). Andy often accompanied the crew to France when the broadcasts at Radio 6 were going strong, and his regular appearances in an early morning spot and the shows in 1998 at MNO covering the 7am - 10am spot prove without doubt that he's the only one of us with an alarm clock. He also presents many programmes from his own studio based in the leafy glades (there's that phrase again) of Hampshire. For all you Shortwave punters, Andy made his debut shows on our American outlet, WBCQ, in January, 2000. In his 'normal' line of work (which must remain a secret for no good reason) he takes regular business trips to exotic locations such as Milan, Brussels and New York, and has a nice car too, so the rest of us are quite rightly jealous of him and talk about him a lot behind his back. Andy's obsessions include Denim Jackets, 'Live Rock', and Guinness.

PROFILE : Johnny Reece

JOHNNY REECE
Much has been said about Johnny Reece, although none of it here.
Johnny Reece and colleagues formed The Album Zone in January 1997, because there was nothing much else to do that night, and the pub was already closed. According to which particular source of information you read, Reece was born in either 1966, 1962, or 1958. When very drunk, he has attempted to claim he was born in 1973. Perhaps he doesn't know. I say this, because I asked him, and he said "I don't know".
This is, of course, a lie. What isn't a lie is the fact that he owns his own CD & Record Shop in London, is current London Pop Quiz Champion (only because he steadfastly refuses to defend the title he won in 1991, therefore unfairly still holds it) and boasts a personal Record and CD collection of over 12,000 Albums. "Having a Record Shop helps" says the exiled Scotsman. He has also built the main Album Zone Studio at a secret location on the Hertfordshire borders, which is used for pre-recording specialist Album Zone Programmes for both Europe and the USA, around the world on the internet, and for production purposes. The rest, as they say, is hysterical.
His obsessions include Roxy Music, Emiliana Torrini, T.Rex, The White Stripes, Hairdressers, Heinz Tomato Ketchup, Cheerleaders, Manchester United Football Club, Crisps, and Tea.

If he ever won the Lottery, he would "expand the Album Zone to wipe out all those crappy formatted Stations", and "spend the rest on Toys and Sweets".
